When I'm approaching burnout on any particular task or goal, I like to employ a strategy that I refer to as "productive procrastination." In essence, it's accomplishing a task that absolutely does not need to be done in the present, yet should probably be done eventually, and therefore isn't a total waste of time when needing a break from more pressing matters. During the weeks-long process of tearing out carpet, staples, and tack strips, I decided I needed a day where I could keep my spine elongated. The existing knobs in the kitchen and laundry room were wooden, and they had a strange film over many of them, which was partially sticky and partially crumbling off. Although I probably could have taken them all off, stripped them down, and reapplied them, I wanted something to offset the sea of green in the kitchen anyway. My long-term goal is to renovate it from top to bottom, but considering I'll be living with the current setup for a while, I want to at least make it fresh and moving in the direction of where I'd like it to go.
I love matte black hardware and fixtures, and it happens to be one of the few colors that doesn't clash with the existing shade of avocado in the kitchen. I therefore found a simple knob that was about 90 cents a pop, and gave the kitchen a 2% update into the future. While likely not very noticeable to most, I'm pretty excited about this upgrade! It's the first task that involved replacing instead of just tearing out, so it's starting to feel like some restorative progress is being made. I still have a lot more demo and grunge work to do, but here's to productive procrastination when the oil is burning low!
